Management of First-Calf Heifers

چکیده
first-calf heifers presents one of the greatest challenges to cow-calf producers. The physical and nutritional stresses associated with parturition, lactation and continuing her own growth, create a real challenge for the two-yearold cow. Calving difficulties, weak calves, calf death loss and scours are all potential pitfalls that can be avoided or reduced with proper management and nutrition. But, perhaps the biggest stumbling block with first-calf heifers is getting them rebred in a timely fashion. Data from South Dakota herds enrolled in the Cow Herd Appraisal Performance Software (CHAPS) program shows a tendency for heifers to calve on time as twoyear-olds, calve late as three-year-olds and then be open in the fall when they wean their second calf. Five years of culling data from the North Dakota CHAPS program supports this tendency as the highest percentage of cows culled for reproductive failure were three-year-olds. The twoand three-year-old cows accounted for nearly one third of all the open cows culled. Therefore, not only getting first-calf heifers rebred, but also getting them bred early in the season are of great importance to the long term success of the breeding program.

Heifer calving date positively influences calf weaning weights through six parturitions.
Longevity and lifetime productivity are important factors influencing profitability for the cow-calf producer. Heifers that conceive earlier in the breeding season will calve earlier in the calving season and have a longer interval to rebreeding. Calves born earlier in the calving season will also be older and heavier at weaning. Longevity data were collected on 2,195 heifers from producers in ...

A 3-yr study was conducted with spring-born heifers (n = 240) to determine the effects of developing heifers to either 55 or 60% of mature BW at breeding on reproduction and calf production responses. A concurrent study was also conducted with summer-born heifers (n = 146) to examine effects of breeding heifers with the mature cow herd or 1 mo earlier on reproduction and calf production variabl...

Heifer development depends on nutritional management decisions throughout all growing phases. Optimizing costs to raise heifers improves profitability of dairy farms. Feed costs for heifers make up 50% of heifer costs. Required growth rates depend on the desired age at first calving and estimated mature body weight. Intensive milk feeding improves calf growth and subsequent milk production. Pre...
متن کاملSYMPOSIUM PAPER: Economic and Tax Implications for Managing Beef Replacement Heifers
Sustainable cowherds require replacement of cull cows either internally via raised heifers or externally with purchased females. Managing raised replacements begins with a weaned heifer calf and continues on through her second pregnancy and calving. Replacement costs were estimated from research conducted in Nebraska for spring-calving cowherds and included the opportunity cost of the heifer ca...
